Chevaan Daniel, Group Director of the Capital Maharaja Group, has reportedly been elected Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), marking the first time a Sri Lankan has secured the position.
His election represents a significant development for Sri Lanka’s broadcasting industry, placing a Sri Lankan representative in a leadership role within one of the world’s largest broadcasting organisations.
The announcement comes as Sri Lanka hosts the 63rd ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings in Colombo for the first time. The international gathering is being held at Cinnamon Life, City of Dreams, from October 30 to November 3, bringing together broadcasting executives, media professionals and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The event is hosted by the Maharaja Media Network, part of the Capital Maharaja Group, under the theme “Media for Peace and Humanity: Truth, Trust and Transformation.”
Established in 1964 and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the ABU represents 225 broadcasting organisations across 66 countries. The organisation works to promote cooperation, technological development and professional standards across the broadcasting industry.
The General Assembly was officially inaugurated on November 1 under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Discussions at the gathering are centred on major developments and challenges affecting the global media landscape, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity, broadcasting technology and the role of media in strengthening public trust.
